1. The Illinois Public Health Institute
The Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) mobilizes stakeholders, catalyzes partnerships, and leads action to promote prevention and improve public health systems to maximize health, health equity and quality of life for the people of Illinois. IPHI administers partnership‐driven projects addressing specific program areas through its Center for Community Capacity Development (CCCD), the Center for Health and Information Technology (CHIT), and the Center for Policy and Partnership Initiatives (CPPI).
This internship is in the CHIT, which supports meaningful application of health data systems by leading planning, incubation, and implementation of policy and program initiatives. The CHIT develops and activates high‐level project partnerships with a wide variety of organizations and institutions representing multiple sectors to support improving public health and the whole health system.
2. Data Across Sectors for Health (DASH)
IPHI’s Center for Health and Information Technology, in partnership with the Michigan Public Health Institute, serves as the National Program Office for Data Across Sectors for Health (DASH), a national initiative to foster multi‐sector information sharing to improve the health of communities, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. As part of RWJF’s Culture of Health, DASH fosters alignment among health care, public health, and other community systems to address the social determinants of health. DASH activities include:
- Building and disseminating the evidence base for the field
- Working with grantees and other stakeholders to implement innovative practices
- Cultivating relationships among experts and practitioners to foster collective action in the field.
3. Duties and Responsibilities
The exact nature of the internship duties will be negotiated between the intern and the intern supervisor, depending on needs, skills and interests. Possible internship tasks include but are not limited to:
- Providing administrative support for the program i.e. documenting meeting minutes, preparing materials, scheduling and facilitating meetings, organizing electronic files and event planning to accomplish project goals as necessary.
- Assisting in implementation of the All In Learning Collaborative for grantees, partners, and stakeholders which may include: planning/supporting webinars and conference calls, posting resources or articles in the All In online learning platform, working with partners to develop and execute online and in‐person learning activities and events.
- Identifying, annotating and curating materials and resources for DASH Knowledgebase ‐ a tool that enables staff, grantees and partners to find and share relevant information with communities in our network.
- Supporting the development of project documents, factsheets, newsletters, case studies, how‐ to‐guides and other materials.
- Developing and/or maintaining information in databases of projects, participants, stakeholders and partners.
- Internship‐specific projects as may be negotiated.
Qualified applicants will possess the following:
- Must be enrolled in an accredited university/college program for Masters’ or Bachelors’ programs. Likely academic disciplines include: Public Health, Public Policy, Health Policy, Non‐profit Organizational Management, Healthcare Administration. Candidates in other social or physical sciences may also apply.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with G‐Suite (i.e. Google Docs, Sheets, etc.).
- Personally and professionally responsible; ability to take initiative on projects; comfortable working independently and in a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational skills.
5. Desired Skills
Additional areas of expertise may include:
- An interest in improving public health through policy and large‐scale systems change initiatives.
- Willingness to work on a project where the long‐term impact may not be realized during the internship.
- Experience in project management, data systems, research and program evaluation, events management, or budget and financial reporting is desirable but not required.
- Exposure to or knowledge of any of the following is desirable but not preferred: social determinants of health indicators, health equity, community collaboration, multi‐sector data sharing and systems thinking.
The intern will have a designated space, with a desk and a computer at Illinois Public Health Institute, 310 S. Peoria St, Suite 404, Chicago, IL 60607.
7. Compensation, duration, and time commitment
This is an unpaid position. The selected candidate will be expected to work at least 15 hours and/or 3 days per week. IPHI will be happy to work with the student’s institution to support course credit or practicum requirements.
Generally, work will be carried out between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. The work hours will be somewhat flexible to accommodate the intern’s academic schedule and planned time off, if requested in advance.
